Advisory School Council Information & Application

Parents, school staff members, and Rio Rancho residents who would like to play an active role in their schools are invited to serve on one of the school district’s 19 Advisory School Councils.
Schools are now accepting declarations of candidacy for Advisory School Council members for the 2013-14 school year. Those interested in serving on a school council next year are required to indicate their interest by May 31, 2013 by filing a Declaration of Candidacy. This allows councils to be ready to serve at the start of the next school year. If more candidates declare an interest at a school than there are available positions, an election is held in the latter part of July to determine council members.
Here's how to apply!
The form may be downloaded and completed online, but must be submitted to the school where the candidate wishes to serve or to the RRPS district office at 500 Laser Rd. NE. (School profiles which include school addresses and phone numbers are available here.) Candidates may also pick up a declaration of candidacy from the school office at the school on whose council they are interested in serving or at the RRPS District Office.
Before you apply, if you have questions you may read the FAQ's about running for a position. You may also click here to see the list of applicants at each school.

What is an Advisory School Council?(This form is in PDF format, so be sure you've got the latest version of Adobe Reader. Just complete online, then print!)
Advisory school councils advise school principals on budgets, curriculum, and rules and policies. School council members are also expected to be champions for students in building community support for schools, develop creative ways to involve parents in schools, and where appropriate, help to connect schools and students to business resources and opportunities. Council members may also be invited to serve on district-level advisory panels as representatives of their school.
School councils consist of two school staff members, two parents, and two community representatives who must be Rio Rancho residents or have a student enrolled in a Rio Rancho public school. The principal serves as an active member of the council. Business people who are parents or community members are especially encouraged to run for school councils. Parents whose children are “graduating” from elementary or middle school may run at the school their child will attend next year. (For example, parents of children who are “moving up” to 6th grade may run at middle schools.)
Candidates are required to show a picture ID at the time they submit their declaration of candidacy. Candidates running for a community member position must show proof that they reside in Rio Rancho or have a child enrolled in a public school in the Rio Rancho district. Declarations of Candidacy may be submitted at the school at which the candidate wishes to serve or at the RRPS District Office.
