Meet the Head Coach

Brooklyn-born lifelong New York Mets fan Ron Murphy is never far from a baseball diamond. Murphy graduated from Newfield HS in Selden NY with the class of "77". He graduated from the University of New Mexico where he used his degree to start a teaching and coaching career.

A one-time coach of Boston Red Sox player Blake Swihart and Anaheim Angels reliever Brendan Donnelly. Coach Murphy’s first head-coaching position was at Albuquerque’s St. Pius X High School from 1990-1997.

After taking the Sartans to the Class AAAA state championship game for the second year in a row in 1997, Murphy became the baseball coach at Rio Rancho High School in time for its first season (1998). He was 117-42 with the Sartans, and has led the Class 5A Rams to 181 victories and just 69 losses in ten seasons at RRHS (The Rams were 24-5 and District 1-5A Champs in 2007 ). In 2007 the Rams went on to win the State Championship without making a error in the three State Championship games and only allowing two runs scored ! In 2008 the Rams were again very strong and finished 3rd in State . They were 25-3 overall. The Rams won three tournaments in 2008 including Clovis, Las Cruces and Rio Rancho tourney. In 2009 the Rams won their second State Championship by beating nationally ranked la Cueva 6-5. In 2010 Coach Murphy once again lead the Rams to the State Championship game with a 27-3 record. The Rams won the Las Cruces Tournament as well as the Clovis Tournament this season.The Rams were State Runnerup's for 2010. Coach Murphy currently has 536 wins in his coaching career as head coach. The 2018 season was his 33rd year coaching high school baseball. He has now been a Head coach for 28 years. Coach Murphy has sent numerous of players to college for baseball over the years which he is very proud of. Coach Murphy is also president of the New Mexico High School baseball coaches association for the last 7 years. He belongs to both National Coaching associations over 25 years in the BCA and ABCA. He has won numerous awards with both associations and currently serves on some of their committees. 

Married to Minerva, the Murphys have two volleyball-playing college daughters, Valerie and Amber, and a 16-year-old son, Tyler. Coach Murphy also is proud grandpa to Jaedyn, Jaxon and Brooklyn Martinez. Both of his Daughters Valerie and Amber have won Numerous State Championships when in HS at Rio Rancho HS. Valerie played College VB at Marshalltown college in Iowa.  Amber played Volleyball for San Jacinto in Houston and they finished 6th in the country in 2007. Amber finished her senior season at Robert Morris college in Chicago where she was named to the first team all conference and was also named Libero of the year in her conference. Coach Murphys son Tyler is a member of the Rio Rancho Baseball Program. Tyler is the Rio Rancho Bat Boy and has earned 3 State Championship rings as a bat boy before even becoming a player at RRHS ! ! Coach Murphy lost his father to cancer in 2010 and his mother in 2018.  He is the oldest of 8 siblings who are Mike, Joy, Jimmy, Robert, Joan, John, and the youngest Tara !

Murphy has been the head coach at several North-South All-Star baseball games in Las Cruces, and in 2006 he was the head coach for the West All-Stars in the New Mexico Baseball Classic at Isotopes Park. Coach Murphy also was assistant coach for the West team in the 2007 All-American game on Fox TV. Coach Murphy has been named district coach of the year 18 times in his coaching career. He has also won the State and Metro coach of the year numerous times. In 2008, 2013 and 2018 he was was one of the 5 finalist nationally for National Coach of the Year ! Coach Murphy was one of the first members of the Rio Rancho HS Athletics Hall of Fame recipient. Coach Murphy has also traveled to Australia, Puerto Rico, Italy & NY coaching baseball teams for the USA.
